QLD Circular manufacturing economic development opportunity

ThreadUp Australia is expanding its operational textile-to-fibre recycling capability into Queensland from Western Australia.

Circular economy and textiles recovery are identified as priority sectors and future-economy pillars in both state and local government strategies. The Queensland Waste Strategy targets 90% diversion from landfill by 2050.

ThreadUp converts end-of-life textiles, including uniforms, linen, towels and mixed textiles, into reusable fibre and building material applications, helping divert significant volumes of textiles from landfill and supporting a more circular manufacturing economy.

The facility is already operational in Western Australia, with the business now seeking a long-term Queensland home within approximately 1.5 hours of Brisbane to support establishment and commencement of Queensland operations.

ThreadUp already owns and operates its core textile-to-fibre processing machinery, with the immediate priority focused on securing a suitable Queensland location for establishment and commencement of operations by the end of July 2026.

The Queensland expansion would help address a key circular manufacturing gap by providing processed textile feedstock to emerging downstream recovery and manufacturing initiatives, including opportunities linked to the Salvos Textile Recovery Facility.

The opportunity is expected to support local jobs, manufacturing capability and downstream circular economy opportunities within Queensland.

  • Post-session: Keystone Commons may assist with initial coordination and connection of relevant parties to support follow-up discussions. Ongoing discussions regarding site suitability, commercial arrangements and next steps will be determined directly by ThreadUp Australia.

  • Target operational timeframe: ThreadUp is seeking to establish and commence Queensland operations as soon as practicable from July 2026.
